Board of Directors Election 2005 Carol Steele Carol Steele is the Business Development Manager for the Center for Ocean Technology (COT), College of Marine Science, University of South Florida. COT makes chemical, biological and physical sensors that work in harsh environments, such as water, the human body and space. Since 1997, COT has been developing MEMS-sized sensors, for use in military, medical, environmental, and oceanographic applications. Carol serves as the primary conduit for COT to create new business and collaborations with others. Carol is responsible for an aggressive economic development program at COT. With her extensive affiliations with the business community as well as a wide variety of professional organizations, she represents COT in fields ranging from Homeland Defense to MEMS development, helping to coordinate their research efforts with a specially designed marketing strategy to foster a link between the business and scientific sides of research and development. Carol has been attending COMS conferences since 1999. There are several things that appeal to her about MANCEF – one is that it really is the place that brings together representatives from around the globe who are focused on how the small technologies may be used as the basis for products and processes that improve the quality of human life and the environment in which we all live. Another is that really interesting people show up within this organization. She currently serves as MANCEF's Vice-President for the Americas. In that role, she participates in executive and general board meetings, contributes to strategic planning exercises, and serves as the Chair of the Conferences and Workshops committee, which has selected St. Petersburg, FL as the site for COMS 2006 and Melbourne, Australia as the site for COMS 2007. As the Chair of this committee, she is very involved in creating the annual COMS conferences, and is working with other committee members to develop a series of regional workshops, which will take place at various points around the globe.
