About MANCEF: Board of Directors
Deputy Secretary, Business Development Jane has been a member of the Executive Board of MANCEF since September 2002. Currently, she holds the position of Vice President for Asia/Pacific. Career While not directly working in the area of micro and nano technology, Jane has led the Victorian Government's Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Division since mid 1998. The approximately Aus$700 million STI program focuses on building the State's infrastructure, technology skills, and commercialisation capabilities as well as developing global networks and profile for the technology based industries. The Business Development Group also has responsibility for the Australian Synchrotron Project. Currently Jane leads the team developing a strategic plan for the development of micro and nanotechnology capabilities in Victoria, with a particular focus on health and life sciences applications. The Plan will detail the actions required by Government, industry and academia to foster commercialisation/adoption of the small technologies by the relevant industry sectors. While Australia is recognised in a number of areas for its high quality research, its rate of commercialisation of the outcomes could be improved. Jane has led the development and implementation of the Victorian Government's technology commercialisation initiatives as part of the STI Program, building on her experience as an investment manager in an early stage venture company in the late eighties. Education Jane Niall holds an M.Agr.Sci from the University of Melbourne, and spent over a decade working as an economic analyst at that University and in London before first joining the Victorian Government. MANCEF Contributions Jane Niall's first experience of MANCEF was as an attendee at COMS02. Since 2002 Jane has been actively involved on the Executive level of MANCEF. Currently, she holds the position of Vice President Asia/Pacific. The objective of this position is to expand the membership and involvement of MANCEF into this region – an area which has been slower to become involved than Europe and the US. In this role Jane worked with the former President of MANCEF to develop an MOU with ITRI in Taiwan, and to run what was a successful joint workshop in mid-2004. In both 2003 and 2004 MANCEF was a high profile sponsor of a regional Conference organised in Melbourne by the Victorian Government on commercialisation of micro and nano technology. The 05 regional micro and nano Conference, at which MANCEF was well represented, was held in conjunction with Materials Australia. At COMS05 the Board established the Asia Pacific Task Force to coordinate MANCEF's activities across this diverse region with the objective of raising MANCEF's profile, with Jane as chairperson. As COMS07 approaches Jane will be well placed to work with those directly responsible for organising the meeting to ensure that we maximise the promotion of COMS and MANCEF across the Asia Pacific region. Jane assisted with the drafting of elements of the most recent Roadmap, and remains keen to assist in developing material and educating those involved in commercialisation of micro and nano technologies. © MANCEF - Micro And Nanotechnology Commercialization
