President's Message from Kees Eijkel

Dear MANCEF member,

Recently, the 11th Commercialization Of Micro and Nano Systems (COMS) conference was held in St Petersburg, Florida (US). In tropical temperatures, approximately 250 attendants and 37 exhibitors intensively discussed markets, strategies, policies and business in general, in our strongly developing technological arena of micro/nanotechnology.

The impact of COMS2006 on its attendance was much greater than Ernesto, the tropical storm that fortunately decided not to join the event. The results of COMS2006 were pleasing, across the board. The revived program with emphasis on interaction was very well received and proves to be a strong step forward. The organizational team, led by MANCEF's VP for the Americas, Carol Steele, provided a great balance between content, interaction and comfort. The support and interaction with the regional community, another important aspect of COMS, was excellent. I received a wealth of positive response from attendants, and a lot of people telling me they certainly want to join COMS2007 in Melbourne, Australia. That's a rewarding sign of quality and we sincerely thank our organizers for creating such a great event.

COMS is all about bringing the people together who can learn from each other, provide information, create partnerships and bring commercialization a step further. We thank all our sponsors for their support for this great event.

From the people side, we are grateful for the large contingent of new leaders recently elected to serve as Advisory Councillors and Executive Board members. We have succeeded in balancing our regional Advisory Council representation worldwide and have effectively elected the next President of the foundation, Clive Davenport, CEO of Small Technologies Cluster. As President-Elect, Clive (the Australian) will ultimately replace me (the Dutchman) in 2008.

MANCEF also held elections for two Executive Board positions. Current Director, Joe Brown of SiTime, was re-elected to the Board strengthening our continuity and outreach. On behalf of the foundation and also personally, I want to thank Job Elders of C2V for his years of service and insights on two Boards going back to 2002 and since helping found it in late 2000. Raffaella Borzi of Belgium's IMEC will succeed Job Elders beginning next January 2007 and we are blessed to have her support. Thanks, so much to each of our Councillors and Directors for furthering MANCEF's mission.

The sum of these efforts to bring a global MNT community platform are reflected in the numerous organizations we recruit and retain as members planet-wide.We have seen several organizations joining up as new organizational or charter members, another proof of the value we bring to the community and to individual members globally.

At COMS2006 we were able to release the venue for COMS2008: Guadalajara, Mexico. We wish Guillermo Fernandez de la Garza and his excellent team at the U.S.-Mexico Foundation for Science (FUMEC) success in this effort, as always a conference co-production between the region in question and MANCEF. We also thank FUMEC for their continued support of increased membership in MANCEF from across Mexico and Latin America

Discussions on the venue and structure for COMS2009 are already ongoing. We hope to tell you more on that in the near future.

Apart from the COMS conference series, we develop several events with other parties. For instance, the Nanotechnology for Food and Healthfood Industries event in Amsterdam, a production of the Institute of Nanotechnology and MANCEF promises to be a great event that focuses on a specific application area.

Another exciting event is the International Conference on Integration and Commercialization of Micro and Nano-Systems (ICMNS) in China. It will focus on the state-of-the-art research and development in micro- and nano-scale phenomena, devices, systems, manufacturing, and commercialization of micro- and nano-technologies. The ICMNS is on 10-13 January, 2007 in Sanya, Hainan, China. It is co-organized by the Nanotechnology Institute of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Micro/Nano Manufacturing Technology Institution of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), and MANCEF.

MANCEF has many activities, of which events form an important cornerstone. In this issue of our newsletter, I want to highlight some of these important events developed with different partners around the world. They provide real opportunities for our micro/nano community, in speeding up commercialization. MANCEF will continue to foster this development. We look forward to meeting you at our events, or develop one with you.

Your President,

Kees Eijkel

COMS2006 Wrap-up

COMS 2006

COMS2006 in St. Petersburg was a great success! As our president mentioned above, we had an excellent turnout, and the buzz around the floor was incredibly positive. Numerous contacts connected, deals were struck, and futures of the MANCEF membership were enhanced by the knowledge shared, as well as the networking.

Of course the event would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of MANCEF VP for the America's, Carol Steele, who rallied the local community in St. Petersburg to not only provide financial assistance, but also brought the excitement and passion they hold for the future of MNT commercialization in their region.

Our sponsors of course play a huge role in the success of COMS. We would like to thank everyone who continue to support our mission. An extra thank you to our conference partners, the University of South Florida (USF) and Suss Microtec.

One highlight of the conference was the Oerlikon Blazers Coating "Taste of the Tropics" event and facility tour. From the venue to the food, the night was a huge success. Our Awards dinner on the Yacht Starship was an unforgettable evening as well. We had a little rain at the beginning, but that cleared and everyone enjoyed a fantastic dinner with smooth sailing.
