President's Message from Kees Eijkel

Kees EijkelIt's springtime. With that, I'm not referring to the season that our members in the upper part of the Northern Hemisphere are experiencing right now. I'm referring to the winter that economy went through in the past 5 years, approximately. Economic activity is gaining speed, and the interest of players in the various value chains to gain momentum through innovation is increasing rapidly. In the springtime metaphor: the sun heats up the fields, the air is fresh, and there's activity that points to the growth of new life.

Micro/nanotechnology is a provider of innovations and solutions for a large variety of value chains and markets. Many of us are confronted with the increase of thrust for innovation. I have seen some very interesting activities budding and growing in various places throughout the world. And many of them are driven by users and markets, rather than public research money.

This is a very healthy development for our industry. The past years have acted as a Darwinian filter, and some species have had a hard time. Our members are better equipped than ever to seize the opportunity and take positions that can lead to sustainable growth. The technological arena has matured over the past years, which gives us all a better position to grow our industry.

I'm especially looking forward to the events we are involved in as an organization in the coming 10 months, such as our signature conference event - COMS2006 in St. Petersburg, Florida. MANCEF Charter member, SEMI, has offered our members special discounts to exhibit in the Emerging Technologies Hall at SEMICON West in mid-July. Later that same month, we encourage MNT workforce development practitioners to attend the SAME-TEC event. In the latter part of 2006, MANCEF has widely-partnered to bring members to other specific events which MANCEF sponsors: Brazil's MINAPIM event in the very first days of September, Mexico's 3rd Ibero-American MEMS Symposium, in early October, the America's Annual Ibero-American Research and Development Summit in mid-October, Europe's Institute of Nanotechnology/MANCEF meeting on Foods and Healthy Foods in late October, Japan's 12th International Micromachine/Nanotech Symposium in early November, and in the second week of January 2007, the ASME/CMES/MANCEF meeting on the Integration and Commercialization of Micro and Nano-Systems being held in tropical Sanya, China. Contact our Executive office for information on sponsoring or exhibiting at any of these events.

I wish you well,
Kees Eijkel

Coventor's MEMS Design Scholarship Awards Available

Industry standard MEMS software provider, Coventor Inc., along with the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation (MANCEF), will again award "MEMS design scholarships" to students and their professors during the COMS2006 conference. The scholarships are granted based on proposals submitted by students working in micro systems research around the world. Each student will receive a free 1-year license to Coventor's CoventorWare software tools to be used in the University setting. Universities are required to be current MANCEF members to be eligible to submit proposals. MANCEF holds a high standard in accepting proposals for these scholarships. Winners are picked based on the quality of the proposal and must comply with Coventor's high-quality standards in the use of its products. Proposals can be submitted throughout the year until 1 July 2006. The winners will be notified on 14 July, 2006.

In previous years this scholarship reward program has received many outstanding proposals, and on average 3 proposals is rewarded each year. There is no limit to the research topics but a strong relation to commercially viable designs and solutions in the MEMS area is preferred.

To have your proposal considered for this COMS 2006 award, please email your abstract to: scholarship@mancef-coms2006.org

Foresight Nanotech Institute Seeks Nominees for Nanotechnology Awards

Researchers, Students and Journalists to be Honored

Palo Alto, CA -- 11 April, 2005 -- Foresight Nanotech Institute, the leading think tank and public interest organization focused on nanotechnology, is accepting nominations for its premier nanotechnology prizes. Foresight's awards and prizes recognize students, researchers and journalists who work to accelerate the development and positive uses of advanced nanotechnology.

The deadline for prize submissions is 30 June, 2006. Winners will be announced at nanoTX '06, an exhibition and conference to be held in Dallas, Texas, on 27-28 September, 2006. Foresight will award four prizes in 2006: two Foresight Institute Feynman Prizes, the Foresight Institute Prize in Communication, and the Foresight Institute Distinguished Award.

"Our mission is to ensure the beneficial implementation of nanotechnology. We focus on nanotechnology that is good for people and good for the planet. Our prizes are given to those individuals whose recent efforts place us closer to that goal." said Christine Peterson, Co-Founder and Vice President of Public Policy at Foresight Nanotech Institute. "We are pleased to announce our prize winners at nanoTX '06 this year and anticipate that this year's nominations will continue to illustrate rapid progress toward advanced nanotechnology and productive nanosystems."

The Foresight Institute Feynman Prizes, named in honor of pioneer physicist Richard Feynman, are given in two categories, one for experiment and the other for theory in nanotechnology. Established in 1993, these prizes are given to researchers whose recent work has most advanced the achievement of Feynman's goal for nanotechnology: the construction of atomically-precise products through the use of molecular machine systems.

The Foresight Institute Prize in Communication recognizes outstanding journalistic or other communication endeavors that lead to a better understanding of molecular nanotechnology and its high social and environmental impact. This prize was created to encourage responsible coverage of molecular nanotechnology as a means for engaging the public in dialogue leading to improved public policy on this important issue. This prize was established in 2000 and is generously underwritten by the law firm Millstein & Taylor, PC.

The Foresight Distinguished Student Award was established in 1997 and is given to a college undergraduate or graduate student whose work is notable in the field of nanotechnology. This award highlights the winning student's research and underwrites the student's travel to the award conference. This prize is generously supported by Dr. James Ellenbogen, Ravi Pandya, and James Von Ehr, III. To be considered for a prize please apply online at: www.foresight.org.

C2V Awarded Grant to Develop a Fast Handheld Gas Chromatograph for Threat Detection

C2V is pleased to announce that C2V leads a consortium to develop fast handheld chemical threat detectors. Funded by a 2M$ government grant C2V will work with the world leading research at the VU in conjunction with Omnilabo International and will develop an ultra fast, handheld threat detector based on gas chromatography. Gas Chromatographs are used in security and safety, industrial processing, laboratories and quality control. The consortium will focus on fast and handheld screening and detection of toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents for security applications.

C2V develops handheld instrumentation, based on silicon micromachining technology and its proprietary micro fluidics integration platform. Omnilabo International is one of the largest suppliers of laboratory products in the Benelux, with a dedicated chromatography department. The Amsterdam based Analytical Chemistry department of the Vrije Universiteit VU focuses on the development and application of novel analytical technologies to study and measure the interaction of small molecules as well as macromolecular systems

The platform combines micro components with narrow bore capillary GC columns for optimal performance. Functional components such as injectors, detectors, sample definition and diagnostics are integrated leading to higher functional density and smaller, handheld instruments. The flexible system configuration enables tailoring for optimal performance in targeted applications. Read more at the C2V web site
