Karen W. Markus

Karen W. Markus has a background in business and technology management as well as technical expertise in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies. She is currently president of Zeus Strategies, LLC, a consulting company focused on corporate technology strategies, mergers and acquisitions, and disruptive technologies.

MANCEF Contributions

Ms. Markus was a one of the Founders of the COMS confernce series. Karen served as the Co-Chair of the 1st COMS event in 1994, served on the organizing committee for the COMS 1996 and 1998, and was one of the Founders of MANCEF. She also was a contributor and reviewer to the 1st Edition MANCEF International Micro Nano Roadmap. In addition, Karen served as the liaison between NEXUS and MANCEF at the turn of the millenium.

Education

Ms. Markus has a BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and has participated in a number of executive management programs at Harvard Business School, Sloan School of Management (MIT) and the Kenan-Flagler School of Business (UNC).

Career

During 2000-2003, she was vice president, technology strategy, for JDS Uniphase Corp.

Prior to that, Ms. Markus founded and then served as vice president and chief technical officer for Cronos Integrated Microsystems, Inc., the first MEMS infrastructure company supporting the development and manufacturing of MEMS for government, industry and academia which was acquired by JDS Uniphase in 2000.

She served as chairman of the board and executive director of the HI-MEMS Alliance - Research Triangle Park, NC for 1993-1997, and, for 1992-1999, she was director of the MEMS Technology Applications at MCNC, a private, non-profit corporation created to drive technology-based economic development and job creation throughout North Carolina.

For 1984-1989, Ms. Markus was a staff engineer for TRW's Space and Defense Sector.

She has been a member of several National Academies study groups, is a TAB member for the Sensors and Electronics Directorate at ARL and is a member of the Advisory Group on Electron Devices which advises DoD.

Ms. Markus has served as a Director on numerous boards for both public and private companies in the US and Europe.
