Education

1984: Bachelor of Science with first class honours in Chemistry from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Awarded the university medal in chemistry.

1988: Doctor of Philosophy from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Employment

1988 – 1990: Development scientist for commercial mass spectrometry instrumentation at Kratos / Shimadzu, Manchester, UK.

1991 – 1993: Research and Development Manager Kratos / Shimadzu, Manchester, UK for mass spectrometry and surface science instrumentation.

1994 - 2000: Co-founder, director and CEO of HD Technologies Ltd. Manchester UK. HD Technologies was a scientific instrumentation development company which did both contract development and development of its own product lines. The company was acquired by Thermo Electron Corporation (USA) for its mass spectrometry technology in January 2000.

2000 – 2002: General Manager of Thermo Finnigan, Manchester UK. Thermo Finnigan was part of Thermo Electron Corporation and developed and manufactured mass spectrometers with an annual turnover of US$20 million and 65 employees. Thermo Finnigan Manchester operated within the Thermo Electron corporate structure which had an annual turnover of approximately US$2.5 billion.

2002 - present: Founder, director and CEO of PD Analytical Pty. Ltd. (Brisbane, Australia), a consulting company for high-tech businesses, specialising in scientific instrumentation and product development. Major clients:

  • CRC for microtechnology. Business development, project management of environmental sensors and microfluidics projects, management of Queensland operations. Environmental sensor developments included soil moisture sensors and a weather station micro chip for measurement of wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity and light.
  • Thermo Finnigan. Design and marketing consultancy for mass spectrometry
  • Thermo Informatics Asia Pacific. Distribution and marketing strategy for Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Australian Wool Innovations. Technical evaluation and product development of new technologies for wool harvesting
  • Centre for Online Health. Business development strategy
  • University of Wollongong. IP review committee
  • Senviro Pty Ltd. Capital raising, product development, manufacturing and business management. Currently CEO of the company which is developing and manufacturing soil moisture sensors. Senviro is a spin off company from the CRC for microtechnology.

Patents

Author on 12 patents on mass spectrometry and related instrumentation, and one soil moisture sensor patent.
