Welcome

Welcome to the second edition of the e-newsletter for COMS 2006, the 11th annual conference on Commercialization of Micro and Nano Systems, to be held in beautiful St. Petersburg, FL, USA, August 27th - 31st, 2006. MANCEF and Small Tech in the Sunshine will be publishing periodic newsletters to bring you up to date on recent developments as the conference evolves. Check your latest edition of the newsletter or click on www.mancef-coms2006.org for the latest updates on speakers, sponsors, and events. On-line registration is now available.

Program Highlights

COMS2006 is excited to announce a dynamic program highlighting the users, movers, and shakers of small technology:

Michelle Bourke from STS will discuss Equipment and Infrastructure. Mary-Ann Mahar from SoftMEMS will be addressing design tool software for improved time to market and true design for manufacturing. Gerjan van de Walle, from Phillips will present on the MiPlaza (Microsystems Plaza) organization within Philips, embracing the concept of Open Innovation in dealing with the challenges in microsystems R&D and business creation. Bob Solouff will discuss the challenges of stiction elimination, packaging influences, reliability demands and meeting cost constraints by the design approach; including examples from Analog’s MEMS inertial products.

Offering insights on the Global MNT landscape; Mr. Terry Porter, Raytheon Corporate and Dr Jim McGonigal, Raytheon Scotland, will give an overview of small technologies in their respective countries, particularly with emphasis on defense and homeland security applications of MNT. Jeremie Bouchaud will discuss the world MEMS Markets and Dr. David Tolfree will focus this update with progress of commercializing MNT in the UK.

Other fields covered include Jan Emmerzaal presenting a Roadmap on MNT for Food and Agriculture. Luis Garcia-Rubio will bring insights from the medical/bio medical field. Chip Hines from FEMA, John L. Ebel, Ph.D. from AFRL, and Neil Shinn from Sandia National Laboratories will discuss MNT in Aerospace and Homeland Security. MANCEF president Kees Eijkel from Mesa+ will talk about how the combined efforts of government, academic, and industry can result in successful clusters and start-ups in our Infrastructure and Public/Open Innovation session. In the Education and Workforce development area, Anna Tudos will discuss the upcoming MANCEF MNT Workforce Development Roadmap chapter.

MANCEF is pleased to present 2 additional workshops at COMS2006:

The Future of the Medical Device Community: Is Micro/Nanotechnology Right for You?
This workshop is aimed toward medical device manufacturers interested in knowing more about how this important technology can enhance your product lines. Learn about the importance of clustering and networking and how they will add value to individual businesses; and learn how micro and nanotechnology can be important to the future of your business. Facilitator: Dr. J. Malcolm Wilkinson, Managing Director, technology for industry. Registration fee $150 USD. Register at www.mancef-coms2006.org

Annual Meeting of the International HARMST/LIGA Commercialization Group
We will be holding the usual annual workshop for the international HARMST/LIGA Commercialization Group at COMS2006 to enable members to give reports on progress and any development with commercialization of HARMST/LIGA technologies. This year we also want to know about any new infrastructure that has been created or extended that will help the path to commercialization.

Please let David Tolfree know if you wish to give a presentation or a report at the workshop. Any papers will be recorded in the conference proceeding cd but we shall need an abstract sent in by the closing dates that can be found at www.mancef-coms2006.org
Facilitator: David Tolfree Technopreneur dtolfree@mancef.org Registration fee $0. Register on site at the conference.

Those are a few of the excellent speakers already lined up; but we do still have spaces open, so if you are interested in participation in COMS2006 please submit your abstract ASAP to abstracts@mancef-coms2006.org

Abstract submission deadline extended until May 30th, 2006

Abstracts are being solicited for the following topics:

Industry and business models
Niche and high volume applications
The role of roadmaps
Packaging, integration and prototyping commercialization issues
Development of reliability and standards
Equipment, test, and design developments
Social implications of nanotechnology
The role of venture capitalists/angels
The role of governments, development agencies and universities
Building successful MNT regional clusters
Education and workforce development
Emerging applications
Commercialization using HARMST/LIGA
Next generation of small technologies

We have a unique and exciting social program lined up; The annual COMS golf tournament, a chance to head out to the open water for a deep-sea fishing adventure, art galleries, Busch Gardens, and of course the lovely beaches of Florida's coast.

Coventor's MEMS Design Scholarship Awards Available

Industry standard MEMS software provider, Coventor Inc., along with the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation (MANCEF), will again award "MEMS design scholarships" to students and their professors during the COMS2006 conference. The scholarships are granted based on proposals submitted by students working in micro systems research around the world. Each student will receive a free 1-year license to Coventor’s CoventorWare software tools to be used in the University setting. Universities are required to be current MANCEF members to be eligible to submit proposals. MANCEF holds a high standard in accepting proposals for these scholarships. Winners are picked based on the quality of the proposal and must comply with Coventor’s high-quality standards in the use of its products. Proposals can be submitted throughout the year until July 1st 2006. The winners will be notified on July 14th, 2006.

In previous years this scholarship reward program has received many outstanding proposals, and on average 3 proposals is rewarded each year. There is no limit to the research topics but a strong relation to commercially viable designs and solutions in the MEMS area is preferred.
To have your proposal considered for this COMS 2006 award, please email your abstract to: scholarship@mancef-coms2006.org

About COMS

The International Conference on the Commercialization of Micro and Nano Systems (COMS) is the leading annual conference on micro and nanotechnology commercialization education. It brings together leaders in the field from across the world, representing organizations and companies from almost every sector of the community. These include leading industrialists, end users, researchers, equipment vendors, customers, VC and angel investors, educators, media, professional organizations, and government. The small tech community gathers at COMS conferences to learn from others, share their own knowledge, and discuss and debate points of view - all of which contribute to the advancement of this emerging field. For everyone concerned about future economic and business development through the exploitation of MNT, COMS 2006 is a conference that cannot be missed. Further information on the conference can be found on the web site: http://www.mancef-coms2006.org/

We look forward to seeing you In St. Petersburg!
