Welcome
Welcome to the final
edition of the e-newsletter for COMS
2005, the 10th annual conference on Commercialization of Micro
and Nano Systems, held in beautiful Baden-Baden Germany, August
21-25, 2005.
COMS 2005 was a great success, drawing over 275 people
and 35 exhibitors to an exceptional program, wonderful social activities
and the industry's best networking opportunities.
Co-hosts MANCEF and FZK would like thank all
of those who came out to attend.
Program
Highlights
The rebound of the MEMS industry
was demonstrated with talks by Bruce Alton of Micralyne
and Dan Hyman of XCOM
Wireless. Bruce explained how Micralyne was successful by identifying
strategic customers and working with them to grow together. Dan
explained how XCOM Wireless was successful by focusing on niche
market areas and leveraging their expertise in RF MEMS.
The successful emergence of nanotechnology
was seen with Zyvex's
James von Ehr's talk, Nanotechnology without the Hype. James
described how Zyvex's three core areas of expertise: nanomaterials,
nanomanipulation tools, and micro assembled structures; were leveraged
to create products and performance that the market demands, then
selling to those markets.
The invited talk on UK strategy by
David Hughes of the DTI and a detailed presentation on the UK
MNT network by Roger Carline lived up to the pre-conference
hype which highlighted these talks as a main attractions of the
event. Though previous events have highlighted UK excellence, this
is the first time the UK has presented a substantial and coherent
message on its MNT activity during the 10 years of COMS conferences,
despite hosting one of the most popular conferences in Oxford, 2001.
This year the UK had the largest number of delegates in the history
of COMS with many excellent UK presentations and exhibition stands
from companies.
Education
and Workforce Development Session
The education and workforce development
session chaired by Robert Giasolli was also well attended and included
a roundtable discussion of issues that need to be addressed in ensuring
that the MNT workforce is ready for the challenges of this unique
industry. Two important messages are the need for multi-disciplinary
teams, and the need for MNT education at a vocational and technical
school level. Gerhard Salinger's invited talk highlighted the work
that the US National Science Foundationis
doing to ensure that the educational system adapts to the changing
needs of the MNT industry.

MEMS design
scholarships
Industry standard MEMS software provider,
Coventor Inc.,
along with the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education
Foundation (MANCEF),
awarded three MEMS design scholarships to students and their professors
during the COMS 2005 conference in Baden-Baden, Germany in August.
The scholarships were granted based on proposals submitted by students
working in micro systems research around the world. Each student
will receive a free 1-year license to Coventor's ANALYZER
and DESIGNER CoventorWare software tools to be used in the University
setting. Universities were required to be current MANCEF members
to be eligible to submit proposals. MANCEF holds a high standard
in accepting proposals for these scholarships. Winners are picked
based on the quality of the proposal and must comply with Coventor's
high-quality standards in the use of its products.
The 2005 winners are:
• Alejandro Arellano,
of the Advance Technology Institute Tabasco, Mexico for his research
of MEMS Flow Sensor for Micro-Fluidics Applications.
• Ariel Lipson, a PhD student at the Optical
& Semiconductor Devices Group, E.E.E dept., Imperial College
London, UK, for his work on a Free-Space MEMS Tunable Optical Filter
on (110) Silicon.
• Paul Tafoya
of TVI Community College in the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
Program, Alburquerque, NM, for his project consisting of creating
a system for future MEMS instruction and training.
Each student's work will be published by MANCEF and/or Coventor
after they have completed the MEMS research outlined in the winning
proposals. Coventor will offer similar scholarship opportunities
at COMS 2006. Proposals will be accepted by MANCEF's Education committee
Chair, Robert Giasolli rgiasolli@mancef.org
from September 1, 2005 until July 1, 2006.
COMS Thanks Our Lead
Sponsors
COMS would not be possible without the generous
support of our sponsors. We appreciate all of our sponsors and a
special thank you to our lead sponsors: EVG and Süss Microtec
(Lead Equipment Suppliers) and Yolé Developpment (Lead market
analyst).
EV
Group (EVG) is a recognized technology and market leader
for wafer processing equipment.
SUSS
MicroTec is a world leading supplier of precision technology
providing innovative solutions for markets including Advanced Packaging,
MEMS, Nanotechnology, Compound Semiconductor, Silicon-On-Insulator,
and 3D Interconnect.
Yole
Developpment is the world leader in the analysis of
MEMS and compound semiconductor markets.
THANK YOU TO OUR HOST
COMS 2005 would not have been possible without
the hard work of Peter Bley and his team from FZK
acting as the local host organizers. We extend a sincere Thank You
to all who worked tirelessly to bring COMS 2005 together so smoothly.
COMS
2006 Promises new changes
COMS is the leading international
conference in MNT commercialization education, It brings together
the leading international industrialists, researchers, equipment
suppliers, end users, customers, educators, financial experts, and
government representatives. MANCEF is pleased to announce that St
Petersburg Florida, USA, has been chosen as the co-host for COMS
2006.
Exciting new changes are planned
for COMS 2006 to maintain our reputation as the premiere networking
and commercialization event. As the industry evolves, we are committed
to offering fresh changes to bring more relevance and more of what
the community has asked for.
We will be focusing more on the user
community by bringing the companies and organizations that use micro
and nano technologies in their PRODUCTS. MANCEF members will be
working hard to attract speakers from companies that use MEMS and
NEMS, to tell the community what they are looking for in a supplier.
Key features of designs and process flows will be described. If
you have a company or organization that you would like us to attract,
tell Carol Steele (csteele@mancef.org).
We will also be highlighting successful commercializers
of MNT. The MEMS industry, battered by the optical telecom downturn,
is starting to see a recovery with the emergence of successful products
in the wireless, automotive, and defense sectors. At COMS 2006,
we will be bringing examples of these firms to share their experiences
with the community on how they re-focused and re-emerged.

MANCEF
targets Asia/Pacific
MANCEF has committed to extending
its reach to the Asia-Pacific region. We understand that the community
around the Pacific Rim has much to offer in terms of successful
examples of commercialization. In addition, this community has realized
that they have some of the same challenges that the MANCEF community
has faced around the world. At COMS 2005, the MANCEF leadership
met and created a plan for bringing these communities together.
MANCEF created Task Force Asia/Pacific,
led by Jane Niall (jniall@mancef.org)
to build relationships with leading users and suppliers in the region.
This committee will also assist MANCEF by participating in 3 events
in the Asia/Pacific region in the coming 6 months. Taitronics -
11-15 Oct, 2005 in Taiwan, AusBiotech-2005, 20-23 November in Perth
Australia, and 2nd Asia Nano Forum 7-9 Dec, 2005, in Geelong, Australia
MANCEF also announced that COMS will visit the
region for the first time in 2007. Melbourne, Australia has been
chosen as the co-host for COMS 2007. This will be the first time
that COMS is held outside of North America or Europe and promises
to demonstrate the true global nature of the MANCEF community.
