Candidacy Statement

After a short period in the industry as a research assistant and laboratory manager, I took my PhD at Chalmers University of Technology in 1987. Between 1988-1998, I worked at the Swedish Institute of Production Engineering Research, where my initial role was as manager of the electronics packaging unit and my final role was that of vice president. The unit enjoyed a high international reputation and had ten Japanese and ten American customers in 1997. During this period I also worked both nationally and internationally (UNEP and UNDP) with focus on the issue of phasing out CFC. This work was recognised when we received the USA-EPA "1992 Stratospheric Protection Award". In 1998, I accepted the challenge of setting up a new institute that would commercialise research in the area of nano and micro technology. Imego is intended to complement the existing research system at universities and develop products and spin-offs to the benefit of our customers, Sweden and the institute itself.

The technical area of nano and micro technology has an enormous potential to add value to the growth of nations and companies. It is an enabling technology! To clarify this statement, Imego is focusing on sensor systems. As well as developing accelerometer and gyro technology for navigation and motion tracking, we are working with sensors for diapers, chocolate, paint, PSA, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, trucks, cars, ventilation, surveillance, agriculture etc. All these examples testify to what you can achieve if you have technology that is highly reliable, so miniaturized that you hardly can see it and so inexpensive (in large volumes) that cost is not an issue.

In the late nineties I visited several conferences and exhibitions with the aim of finding the right forum for the newly established institute, Imego. I then made contact with MANCEF. When I visited the COMS conference in Oxford in 2001, I felt that this particular conference was perfect. When Imego/Chalmers were asked by MANCEF if we would be interested in being a candidate for arranging COMS 2003 in Sweden we immediately said yes and engaged ourselves deeply in this project. At the excellent conference in Ypsilanti in 2002, we were nominated for COMS 2003 but regrettably had to withdraw our candidacy.

To summarise, MANCEF is an important organisation. COMS is THE Conference catalyzing the commercialisation of industry technology. Sweden occupies an excellent academic position in the field of nano and micro technology. Imego has developed one way to commercialise this technology. And finally I, Bill Brox, believe that I can contribute to MANCEF in the General Advisory Board and I am flattered to be considered as a candidate for such a position.
