Technological Forecasting and Social Change
Special Issue on
World Problems, Emerging Technologies, Social Entrepreneurship, and Creative Enterprise
Critical world problems are becoming more interconnected and require solutions that are more interdependent. Discussions concerning the interconnected nature of global problems and the difficulty that traditional silo based solutions have solving the systematic problem have began in jurisdictions as diverse a world policy makers, academia, and entrepreneurial communities. Critical world problems like clean water, energy and global warming seem straight forward. Yet you cannot solve worldwide shortages of clean water with current technologies without adversely affecting the global demand for energy. You cannot solve the world need for energy with traditional technologies without adversely affecting our carbon footprint. Finally, current solutions for global warming, clean water, and energy have environmental outcomes which are not favorable.
Worldwide Problems that converge require solutions developed at the interface of many technologies and require a fresh look at the types of commercial organizations that might best solve these societal problems. The intent of this special issue is to provide a forum for discussion for the use of emerging technologies as a solution vector for these systemic problems. Further we provide an avenue for the discussion of appropriate technology driven firms and firm’s structures that might best harness converging and often emerging technologies. We invite papers that embrace such diverse emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, micro-systems technology, nano-bio-technology, computational sciences, genetic engineering as applied through commercialization concepts such as creative enterprise, social entrepreneurship, technology entrepreneurship, government entrepreneurial activity and other avenues. These and other emerging converging technologies hold the promise to solve world critical problems while providing job and wealth creation opportunities for the regions that adopt them. Consequently, a special issue on emerging technology as solution drivers for world critical problems is being produced in the Technological Forecasting and Social Change Journal.
This special issue is interested in a wide range of papers. These include quantitative, qualitative and case-based research. Consequently, a wide array of approaches to research are welcome as they may assist in the direction of the next management practices required to harness these solution vectors. Submissions are due to the editors on November 10, 2010. A special session(s) of papers will occur at the COMS 2010 Conference in Albuquerque (http://www.mancef.org/coms). Papers presented at this conference will be provided feedback to assist in preparing the papers for the special issue. However, participation in the conference is not required for consideration in the special issue.
