
James has served the MANCEF community for 8 years, as the Secretary on the MANCEF Executive Board since 2002, and Treasurer from 2006. In that time he has been an active participant in several MANCEF committees including Marketing, Events, and Membership. James also acted as Conference Director for the 2004 COMS Conference held in Edmonton, AB, COMS206 in St. Petersburg, FLA, and COMS2008 in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico; realizing one of the most successful COMS conferences to date. Through his role as Secretary, James helped to operationalize many of MANCEF’s functions, resulting in a streamlined organization that can better serve the needs of its the community. As Treasurer, James oversaw MANCEF’s finances and in that role, ensured the financial health of the Foundation.
James Wylde is VP of business development at 1st Detect Corp, a developer of advanced sensor systems based on mass spectrometry; and a partner in Smart Nanomaterials, a supplier of next generation products leveraging integrated nanotechnology. Prior to 2004, James was responsible for integrated MEMS development at Bookham Technology and Nortel Networks in Ottawa, ON, Canada. As part of this development, the world’s first integrated optical receiver with a MEMS based VOA was commercialized.
James received the PhD and BEng degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, Canada and the MASc degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto in Toronto, ON, Canada. James has authored or co-authored over 25 articles, conference papers, and book chapters in commercialization, MEMS, nanotechnology, and materials research. James is also on the Board of Directors of the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation (MANCEF), the MEMS Advisory Group for CMC Microsystems, and has organized numerous conferences and workshops on small technology and commercialization.
