Prof. Dean M Aslam, Ph.D

Dean M. Aslam received his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in Electrical Engineering (1983) and M.S. (Dipl.Phys.) in Physics (1979) from Aachen Technical University (RWTH), Germany.

Currently, Dr. Aslam is Associate Director of NSF ERC for WIMS (jointly awarded to U. of Michigan, Mich. State U. and Mich. Tech. U.), Director of Micro and Nano Technology Lab (MANTL) and Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University.

His current research is on micro- and nano-fabrication technologies focusing on polycrystalline diamond (poly-C), carbon nanotubes (CNT) and cognitive, Lego-based educational modules. In particular, his research concentrates on poly-C piezoresistive sensors, biochemical nanosensors, poly-C RFMEMS micro and nano resonators, CNT growth in PCF channels of a micro-GC, poly-C BioMEMS (Cochlear & Neural probes), poly-C smart MEMS packaging, and hands-on robotics learning modules for K-12, UG and graduate teaching. Most of Dr. Aslam's research is funded by the NSF ERC for Wireless Integrated Microsystems (WIMS) and Michigan Schools & parents .

Dr. Aslam's group became the first to report (i) an all-diamond neural/cochlear probe in 2007, (ii) incorporation of poly-C piezoresistive sensors in Si cochlear probes in 2006, (iii) the highest quality factor for poly-C cantilever beam resonators in 2005, (iv) all-diamond MEMS packaging in 2004, (v) field emission electroluminescence (FEEL) in 2003, (vi) an intra-grain piezoresistive gauge factor of 4000 in poly-C in 1997 and (vii) piezoresistivity in diamond and poly-C in 1991.

He has published over 124 papers and holds 10 US patents in the field.

He was a recipient of German DAAD Fellowship during 1975 - 83.

Dr. Aslam is Associate VP Americas of MANCEF, a senior member of IEEE and founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Nanosystems and Technology (IJNST).
